NAFDAC storms Idumota market, seals 3000 shops, 12 truckloads of illicit drugs seized

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has intensified its crackdown on illicit and counterfeit pharmaceuticals, shutting down more than 3,000 shops at the Idumota Open Drug Market in Lagos within a week of enforcement operations.

In a statement posted on ๐• on Saturday, NAFDAC revealed that the raid uncovered alarming violations, including vaccines stored in poorly ventilated, makeshift iron-sheet rooms, posing serious health risks.

Officials also seized large quantities of prohibited and hazardous drugs, including Analgin injections, diverted HIV antiretroviral medications, and expired drugs intended for illegal revalidation.

The statement read, โ€œIn the first week of enforcement, NAFDAC screened and sealed over 3,000 shops within the Idumota Open Drug Market in Lagos.โ€ย

โ€œAmong the discoveries were vaccines stored in dilapidated, unventilated rooms sealed with iron sheets in highly unsanitary conditions.

โ€œAdditionally, large consignments of banned products, including Analgin injections, diverted-free HIV antiretroviral drugs, expired medicines set for revalidation, and unregistered pharmaceuticals, were found.

โ€œWe have evacuated illicit pharmaceuticals equivalent to 12 truckloads.

โ€œEmpty packs and cartons of expired unregistered antimalarial injections were discovered inside a packing shop. The vials were removed.

โ€œ#HappeningNow Ecstasy (MDMA or Molly), various brands of Codeine Cough Syrup, and Tramadol 225 were discovered in a warehouse within the market, away from the pharmaceutical section where other products are sold.โ€

NAFDAC emphasized that this enforcement aligns with its ongoing efforts to sanitize Nigeriaโ€™s drug distribution system and combat the rising threat of counterfeit and dangerous medications.

Graduate passes away after N9.4m crowdfunding for cancer treatment

Oluwafemi Ayo-Owolawi, a 31-year-old graduate of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, has sadly passed away following a prolonged battle with renal cancer.

His death was announced on Saturday by Lagos-based public analyst Yinka Ogunnubi via X (formerly Twitter).

โ€œIt is with great sadness that we announce the unfortunate passing of Oluwafemi Ayomide Ayo-Owolawi. Femi has gone to be with the Lord and will be buried today. His family wishes to express their profound thanks and gratitude to all those who contributed towards his cancer treatment. You all gave Femi a fighting chance,โ€ Ogunnubi wrote.

He added, โ€œFemi fought, he did. Even in death, he was smiling. We thank God for his life and the impact he made while he was still with us. May God console his family, may God strengthen his mum, and may Femiโ€™s soul find eternal rest. RIP Champion!โ€

In 2024, Ogunnubi, alongside Ayomide Adebanjo, launched a social media campaign to raise funds for Femiโ€™s treatment through GoFundMe. Despite efforts to secure N12 million, only N9.5 million was raised, of which N9.4 million was spent on his surgery and chemotherapy.

Following his initial surgery in May, oncologists recommended 12 cycles of chemotherapy, but despite undergoing treatment, Femi ultimately lost his battle with the illness.

His passing has left many heartbroken, with tributes pouring in for the young man who fought valiantly against cancer.
